DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jerome Lesemann and students\nVancouver Island University\nFall term 2022 \nSaturday\, December 10\nQuadra Community Centre\n12:30 pm \nNearly 500 wells draw water from Quadra Island Aquifers\, but we know little of their extent\, how much water they hold\, or how fast water from above recharges them. This current fall term\, Dr. Lesemann’s hydrogeology course has been using drill log data from several hundred wells to construct a 3D model of south Quadra aquifers and the geological materials they reside in. They will present that map in relation to an accurate\, 3D\, high-resolution LIDAR map of the surface and discuss its implications. \nThis talk will be highly educational\, thoroughly thought-provoking\, and well worth attending. \n– – – \nAs the Water Security Team’s long-term studies unfold\, new kinds of information will lead to deeper and more useful understanding of island water supplies. This will inform Quadra ICAN’s aim to produce rational\, reasonable\, community-based strategic plans for resilience and sustainability in the rapidly changing\, increasingly uncertain future ahead. \nDonations will be gratefully accepted.

DESCRIPTION:Free for members/$3 for guests \nINCLUDING THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: \nQuadra Climate: Normal and Extremes \nThe Sunshine Coast and Discovery Islands region exhibits extreme\nseasonality of precipitation\, with the least coming when it is most\nneeded for gardening.  Of course\, there is an upside to this due to\nlong sunshine hours supporting plant growth during the height of the\ngrowing season.  It appears that this seasonality will be getting\nmore extreme as the global climate changes.  What limitations does\nthis pose for gardeners? What can we do to adapt? \nAquifers and Aquitards on Quadra Island \nWhat do we know and not know about groundwater aquifers on Quadra?\nWhat additional information would be useful in the case of either\nincreased irrigation demand or more extended droughts?  The\ncharacteristics of the Quadra aquitards are both a limitation and a\ndistinguishing benefit for Quadra Island as compared with other\nislands. \nHydraulic characteristics of typical south Quadra topsoil and\nsubsoils with emphasis on seasonal water excesses and deficits. \nTechnical detail about the dominant topsoil types (Fine Sandy and\nSilty Loam) presenting issues and opportunities for gardening. \nRainwater Capture and storage \nHow to make the most effective use of stored rainwater. \nGreywater retention and use \nPotential volumes\, plumbing\, storage\, and use limitations. \nSome techniques for water conservation \nHügelkultur beds\, keyline swales\, organic soil enhancements\,\nxeriscaping or water-wise landscaping\, mulching.  An invitation will\nbe extended to the audience to add to this list\, and describe\ntechniques that they have tried on Quadra. \nPLUS Coffee\, Desserts\, Show & Tell Table\, Plant & Seed Table…all\nthat fun stuff! \nFor more info contact quadraislandgardenclub@gmail.com
